Joe Norris

Joe Norris is a painter and tutor based in the Surrey village of Walton on the Hill. He grew up in the rural Kent village of Yalding, surrounded by orchards and hop fields. Some of his earliest paintings were of local oast houses and hop fields. He trained at Maidstone College of Art and at The University College of Wales, Aberystwth, where he graduated in art and art history, specialising in photography as an art form.

After a career in marketing and communications, Joe began to devote more time to painting ten years ago, and achieved success with his local Tadworth Art Group, frequently winning prizes and accolades at their exhibitions.

More recently, Joe decided to begin running his own regular painting workshops, which have been a huge success and are popular with beginners and experienced artists alike. He wanted to share his own experience of ‘finding his art’ and encourages the idea that we are all able to find ourselves through art, given enough space and encouragement.

Joe’s demos and workshops are lively and often deliberately challenge the ‘watch what I do and learn to paint like me’ format. Although carefully planned, he will often include an element of experiment or two, ‘just to see what happens’. This encourages a sense of freedom and sometimes adds a little risk to add spice!

Joe lives with his wife and their dog Dolly. Dolly attends all his own workshops to maintain control and strict time management. He has travelled widely and often sources his subjects outside his home patch.
