Becky Gouverneur is a professional artist specialising in bold, realistic animal portraits, primarily in charcoal, with occasional work in graphite, pastel and coloured pencil. Her large-scale, high-contrast drawings capture not just the form but also the character and story behind each subject, often bringing unexpected meanings and messages into her drawings.

Her demonstrations and workshops are lively, informal, and highly engaging. Becky combines technical explanations with storytelling, sharing insights from her career and her own photography of animals in the field. During demos, audiences experience a “hands off” workshop where each stage of her process is explained, from materials and techniques to her signature approach to sharpening charcoal pencils.

Accessible to all levels, Becky’s sessions are particularly rewarding for artists with some experience who are ready to explore charcoal beyond the loose, messy scribbles often associated with the medium. She also offers online demos and live Zoom tutorials, providing close-up views and interactive guidance.  Becky is a member of Oxford Art Society, the Association of Animal Artists and teaches regularly with the SAA as well as teaching part-time at a secondary school.  She brings the patience and clarity of a teacher to every session, ensuring complicated techniques are easy to understand, explained in a down-to-earth manner with humour, and never intimidating.

Her forthcoming book, Drawing Animals in Charcoal (due out early 2027), blends technical instruction with reflective, mindful approaches to drawing, and complements her workshops perfectly, whether used as preparation, inspiration, or follow-up learning.

Becky travels up to two hours from MK18, North Buckinghamshire, regularly working with art clubs, societies, groups, and individuals across the UK.
