Susan Clare
Susan paints in watercolours, acrylics and mixed media, drawing inspiration from Jamaica’s tropical environment where she lives for over 6 months of the year. Subjects that inspire her include her tumbling tropical garden, Caribbean faces full of character, Seascapes and the underwater life encountered daily, in her first career, scuba diving. Susan loves to add mystery to her work with ambiguous passages of texture and light, colour and pattern, striving to say more by doing less and blurring the boundaries between realism and abstraction. She likes the medium to tell the story of how the painting was created, with runs, splashes and dribbles, or blocky brushwork all left in the finished work.
The themes in Susan’s work span two continents, but in common, they encourage mindfulness and a reverence for life in its natural, graceful simplicity. She wants the viewer to feel connected to and, more importantly, protective of the natural world.
In 2016, Susan won the SAA Professional Artist of the Year Award as well as the top award for Professional Animal and Wildlife Category. She received two more SAA Awards in the same competition in 2018. She has shown work at the Mall Galleries with both Artists and Illustrators Magazine and the David Shepherd Wildlife Fund.
Recent notable commissions include a Landscape to honour Sir Christopher Hohn, commissioned by Hanover charities in 2019. Her work also featured on the front cover of Paint Magazine in the same year.
