Portraits, Animals

I am a self-developed artist with a particular love for character and portrait studies. My pastel technique I have worked on over many years into a style which, although not maybe unique is certainly individual.

My interest and development in portraiture and face studies commenced seriously whilst I was living and working in Africa between 1978 and 82 . My work found me involved in many and varied human related issues and activities. With my wife, Sylvia, we travelled far and wide throughout the homeland countries of Southern Africa, going into many rural areas, and it was on one of these visits that I started to do flash portraits of African children.

Living in such a country also gave me an interest in wild life hence so many studies of animals and birds from various countries I have visited.

From the very beginning I quickly realised that this was something I wanted to concentrate on and so purchased my first box of pastels. I found an immediate affinity with this medium and from that point worked on developing the style I have today.

Since those early days we have lived in Australia, the UK and the Netherlands, as well as visiting and working in 6 countries in South America, Canada and the USA all of which gave me inspiration for my pictures.

Using the opportunities to support the work I was doing, I was able to fund-raise by exhibiting and auctioning my pictures. I have also illustrated books, both in colour and pen and ink as well as first day covers and stamp designs. In addition I have latterly moved into acrylics but still maintaining my first love of soft pastels.

I have now retired to the market town of Spalding, Lincolnshire, UK and within the first few months of being here commenced holding pastel/portrait art classes as well as exhibiting my work in a number of locations. This has now broadened to all mediums.

I am available for demonstrations within a 50 mile radius of Spalding, Lincs.
