At a very early age Nicholas showed an aptitude for art to such an extent that his mother and Grandfather felt that art would be the basis of his career. His Grandfather was an Art Master and celebrated Portrait Painter. His mother, who took lessons from his Grandfather also became a highly successful Professional Artist.
At the age of 12, his Father, who did not think that (In the late 1940's) there was security and a future in Art, sent him to Junior Technical School. From there Nicholas took an apprenticeship with an engineering company in Crawley. He attended a day release course and gained a "Higher National Certificate in Applied Physics". After working for 8 years with the Engineering company, it suffered a devastating strike which lasted for 26 weeks. At the time, Nicholas's mother was running the Croydon Galleries at Croydon and Nicholas took the opportunity to join his mother as a Picture Framer. This continued for 12 years.
During a trip to Scotland in the late 1960's he was taken with the wonderful scenery that his desire to paint was seriously re-awakened. He took to his old passion like a man possessed and hugely regretted his "Wasted Years" in engineering In 1975, The Croyden Galleries closed down and Nick took to painting professionally and full time. The next 10 years were spent intensively learning all he could about art as well as painting busily. Even after this period, like all good artists, he has continued learning.
In 1980 he was fortunate to obtain a position on the Railings in the Bayswater Road and was "Discovered" by several American Galleries and he was soon supplying them on a regular basis, and by 1994 the galleries were taking all his work, so he relinquished his position on the Railings.
In 1987, Nick had moved to Eastbourne, which led to discover the unique Sussex Countryside, and this is what he now paints almost exclusively. As he became known in the area, he was invited to give demonstrations and lectures to various local Art Societies. Around this time, he joined the Polegate Art group to whom he regularly gives instruction and advice. The disaster of September 11th 2001 abruptly closed his market in the U.S.A. He was able to partially fill the gap by selling at local exhibitions and increasing his schedule of talks and lectures. At this time, he also took up the running of Westham Art Group. He is also a member of the Society of Eastbourne Artists, the Wannock Art Group, and the Battle Art Society. (Nick was previously a member of the Croydon Art Society and the West Wickham Art Group)
Nick has exhibited twice in conjunction with his mother at the Fairfield Halls in croydon in 1976 and 1978. Two of his paintings have been reproduced by Sussex Stationers as cards and Calendars, one of which, (A view of Ashdown Forest) is still available. Nick now exhibits on a permanent basis at The StewArt Gallery in Eastbourne. StewArt Gallery, 25 Grove Road, Eastbourne, E.Sussex BN22 4TT Tel: 01323 729588 Email stewart.gallery@virgin.net.
