Printmaking: Linocut, Traditional Japanese Woodblock

I am an artist printmaker specialising in linocut printing and traditional Japanese woodblock printing. Over the years I have attended three printmaking residencies in Japan, studying woodblock printmaking with master craftsmen. Japan has had a huge impact on my work, changing my approach to linocut printmaking as well as allowing me to enjoy the painterly and subtle Japanese woodblock print process. My prints consist of many very thin layers of printing with a textural approach, a long way from the flat colour of traditional linocut printing!

My book ‘Making Japanese Woodblock Prints’ came out in late 2019 (Crowood Press) directly inspired by my love of teaching and my own experiences working in Japan.

In addition to my printmaking I teach, write a monthly column for Artists and Illustrators Magazine and work on the occasional public art project. I also co-host the weekly podcast ‘Ask an Artist’ with fellow artist Peter Keegan.

My prints feature in national collections including the Buckinghamshire County Museum, The House of Lords and the Library of Wales. I also have prints in the Nagasawa Art Park collection and the MI-Lab Print Collection in Japan and have been elected to the Royal Society of Painter Printmakers.

I am happy to travel up to an hour from my home in Winslow, Bucks.
