Beautifully Smooth Watercolour Paper

Dilemma: I want to use a watercolour paper with a smooth HP surface, and use large washes. If I 'soak and stretch' the sheet the surface becomes rougher, if I don't the paper cockles and buckles when I lay the washes down. Luckily, St Cuthbert's Mill in the West Country has created a new Hot Pressed paper in their exquisite Saunders Waterford range of papers, in a heavy 638gsm (300lb) weight.

This new paper is beautiful, and perfect for those high detailed paintings, or compositions where you do not wish the surface texture of the watercolour paper to be too imposing. If you would like to see a demonstration on the beauty of using HP watercolour paper, we have a number of demonstrators available, just ask when booking.

We also have FREE samples available to give away. If your club would like to see a sample of the new Saunders Waterford 638gsm (300lb) HP paper, please call us, and we'll pop one in the post.

Paul Arnott

Paul is a South Wales based artist, living in Cardiff. He has been painting in watercolours for many years, and has been demonstrating his method at local art groups and societies. He has also put together a new and exciting presentation where he draws and paints on a computer, whilst projecting the progress onto a screen so that the audience can appreciate it. Paul recognises that the very name "computer" can intimidate many people, so the presentation is very light-hearted in its content. He uses a program to paint a scene using very clever simulation of media, and shows some mounting and framing examples. Area: South Wales and West.

Arnold Cox

Arnold explains, 'It began casually enough. A few pictures here and there. Then it started to take more of a hold, I started to spend secret lunchtimes and free periods at school preparing for A level art. I wanted to go to art school but was persuaded that architecture would be a more fitting career. But I kept on painting. Now I have a lot more time to devote to painting. I use whatever media is at hand to develop what is on my mind. So I love to experiment and above all colour is the driving force. I still cannot lose that tactile, childish, joy in mixing it and slapping it on. . Subject matter is diverse but it usually comes back to nature - our intervention with nature and the wonderful visual stories it unlocks. I have exhibited at galleries in London and Dorset and had solo shows at the now sadly defunct Flagship Gallery in Poole". Arnold lives in Poole and is available for demonstrations in the South and South West.

Stephen Foster

Stephen has been a professional artist since 1985, initially as a watercolour painter but now using oil and acrylic as well. Probably his most popular watercolour demonstration shows his 'wet in wet' watercolour technique. In oil and acrylic he often demonstrates his land and seascapes technique using a palette knife. A basic principle of his art is the avoidance of too much detail. Most painters want to 'loosen up' and Stephen's approach will help them to do that. . He has exhibited work in many prestigious galleries and has work in more than twenty countries around the world. Stephen is available for demonstrations in the South and SW.

Heather Jolliffe

John brings his own video equipment and projector to his demonstrations.

David Norman

David is a prominent English water colourist, who divides his time between studios in Devon and the Dordogne. David's watercolours are unashamedly traditional and figurative but also underpinned by a strong sense of draughtsmanship, a legacy from a rigorous training in architectural drawing. Over the years his palette has become more and more refined as he tries to simplify and justify his paintings in terms of tone and atmosphere alone. He is the author of 2 books and is available for demonstrations in the SW.

Gahan Oliver

Gahan Oliver has lived and worked in Devon most of her life. She trained at Newton Abbot College of Art and now works as an artist and art teacher in adult education. Gahan works mainly in oil, using a palette knife rather than a brush, and her subject matter is wide ranging, generally representational, including landscape, portraiture and animals. Gahan is available for critiques and workshops only in the SW.

Deborah Vallance

Deborah is a professional artist based in Christchurch, Dorset. She has been painting for over 20 years, developing her artwork with textile techniques such as Procion Dyes and Batik. Her work appeals to a broad spectrum of art lovers. Deborah says "of all the techniques I have learnt, the most enjoyable for me is batik on paper. This technique encourages vibrant use of colour together with a degree of iconoclasm as the images created are literally torn up and reformed to make something quite different from the original idea." Deborah also demonstrates printing techniques, collage and decorative paint finishes. She is available for demonstrations in the South and South West.

Jake Winkle

Jake studied at Bournemouth College of Art & design and became a full time professional artist in 1993. He has exhibited widely in the South of England and in 2004 was a finalist in the Daily Mail's "Not the Turner Prize" competition, and successfully exhibited in the Mall Galleries in London. Inspired by light and movement his watercolour paintings are reflections of the world around him. Jake lives in Dorset and is available for demonstrations and workshops in the South and SW.

New Artists - North

Maggie Banks

"The greatest inspiration behind my work and much of my primary source material is landscape but I also work from a variety of other sources - memories, dreams and emotional situations of all kinds. I attempt to portray my personal feelings about subjects. I am interested in creating complex, sometimes simple, paintings based on an interaction between the man-made and the natural world." Maggie demonstrates in watercolours, acrylics, oils, pastels, gouache and mixed media. Based in Herefordshire she is available for demonstrations in this area.

Pascale Bigot

Pascale was born in Tulle, France and always loved drawing and painting even as a child. She studied Architecture in Clemont-Ferrand and joined the evening classes at Les Beaux Arts where she used charcoal and sanguine in her drawings. After moving to Versailles she started to use watercolour in her drawings and began to sell her paintings in Paris and had her first solo exhibitions in France. Pascale was surprised that her watercolours seemed bright compared to others when exhibiting not realising that one had to use a lot of water when painting in watercolours. For her it was more about colour that water. When Pascale moved to England she tried to paint "A l'Anglaise" but it was not bright enough for her. When looking for a new medium she discovered pastels. Over the years Pascale has painted almost every subject and there is no subject she would not tackle as long as she likes it and can visualise it as a simple drawing and reduce it to its essential lines. She now paints mainly in soft pastel, acrylics, mixed media, watercolour pencils and ink. Based in Stourbridge she is available for demonstrations in the Midlands.

Jan Freeman

Jan has been teaching art from her purpose built art studio in Warwickshire for 10 years. She learnt to paint in the U.S.A. at Silvermine Guild of Artists where the watercolorist Charles Reid taught. Jan is equally comfortable in any medium and particularly tries to capture mood in her work. She does this by using light and colour to enhance her subject matter. Although Jan can paint any subject matter, she prefers to incorporate people into her paintings. She also paints a good few portrait commissions. Jan is available for demonstrations in Warwickshire and the Midlands.

Jim Remon

Jim is a teacher and artist from Stafford. He specialises in acrylics, pastels, line & wash and mixed media. His subjects include landscapes, seascapes, railway engines, boats and horses, plus detailed pen & wash paintings. Jim is available for demonstrations and workshops in the areas surrounding Stafford, the West Midlands and the Northwest.

Norman Rossiter

Norman was born in Torquay, South Devon, and spent most of his childhood watching and drawing local flora and fauna. At the age of 12 he exhibited his first painting/drawing. After college Norman worked for 16 year in the advertising and display industry before becoming a freelance designer/illustrator and artist. Having painted many different subjects as a naturalist and ornithologist, in 1990 Norman decided to dedicate all his efforts to painting, what he loved most, wildlife and the countryside. He has exhibited throughout the UK and overseas and has won a number of awards for his work. Norman is available for demonstrations in Watercolours, acrylics, oils, gouache and mixed media. Now living in Lincolnshire he is willing to travel up to 100 miles and would be happy to visit groups in the SW of the country.

She is a Professional Associate with the Society of all Artists and a listed tutor for the Federation of Northern Art Societies. She is available for group or individual tuition at any venue in the North of England. Carol says, "FUN is the emphasis in my classes and laughter is definitely part of the criteria".

David Wilcox

As a watercolorist David uses the traditional English technique of many transparent washes, allowing the white of the paper to create the highlights. By contrast, in his canvases, David has been using the Baroque technique of pulling the image out of a dark background for dramatic effect. His repertoire encompasses a wide variety of subjects including dance, landscapes and figure studies. He is at present collaborating with the Birmingham Royal Ballet in a series of works, exploring aspects of dance with a greater emphasis on dynamic composition and colour. David is available for demonstrations in and around the West Midlands and examples of his work are on the Art Profile website.

Carol Wilson
