New Artists

Cheryl Clayton

Cheryl says "I have a deep passion for creating art work, I'd like to say works of art but that is in the eye of the beholder. My early experiences were to learn from and enhance other artists work through my picture framing. Now I am able to pass on my knowledge to others through my teaching. I am a member of the Redditch Art Circle and am available for demonstrations and workshops in the West Midlands."

David Westhead

I was born in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, England and educated there in the 1960s. Later, I was awarded a Honours Degree in Fine Art with Art History, at Falmouth School of Art in Cornwall, where my tutors included Patrick Heron and Terry Frost. A teaching career in Lancashire and Dorset followed, during which time I continued to produce and exhibit my own work. In 2001, I left the school environment to concentrate on my own work and take up a career lecturing on the History of Art for the Workers Education Association (WEA). I offer a series of lectures as detailed below. I am available for talks in Dorset, Somerset, East Devon and Somerset.

Mike Hughes

Mike was born in Lancashire in 1970 and now lives in Devon with his young family.
Wildlife Art I like to work on a large scale, mainly painting in acrylic on board. I have exhibited work at the National Exhibition of Wildlife art, the Mall Galleries, Marwell International Wildlife Art Society and at the British Bird Fair. My work has sold both nationally and internationally.
Illustration I have worked as a freelance illustrator for the last 10 years. My illustrations have appeared in books, magazines, posters, brochures, leaflets and identification panels. They range from small scientific studies to large 4 metre murals. Mike is available for demonstrations and workshops in Devon, West Somerset and West Dorset.

Mick Loates

Mick Loates was born in South London, 1947 and studied at Sidcup and Ravensbourne Schools of Art. Throughout a career spanning forty four years his output has been considerable solely illustrating 22 titles which include two Henry Williamson classics, 'Salar the Salmon' and 'A Clear Water Stream', and 'The Collins Guide to Fishes of Britain & Europe'. He has contributed to well over one hundred titles on wildlife and sporting topics and has been featured both on television and radio interviews. He is additionally an accomplished painter of nudes and portraits. Mick has exhibited extensively throughout the UK and overseas Employing both graphite and transparent watercolour he works into the white of the paper, building tone with dry brush over glazes avoiding use of body colour, white paint or masking fluid. Mick's influences include Singer Sargent, Winlsow Homer, Stanhope Forbes, Millais, Holman Hunt, Waterhouse and the Wyeths. He lives and works from his home on the South Devon coast.

Richard Larkin

After leaving school in the late sixties I trained in studio pottery and for many years operated my own ceramics studio, and then in 1991 became a full time student at Brighton University gaining formal Art Qualifications, and a Cert.ed Teaching qualification. Over the last few years I have delivered workshops of my own in Watercolours and Acrylics. I am an authorised Chroma Tutor for the Atelier interactive acrylics. I have also given demonstrations to local Art Societies and been well received with a number of requests for a return visit. I am available for demonstrations and workshops in Watercolour, acrylics, pencils and line and wash in Sussex and Kent.

Has any of your committee or members an Email address we can use for future mailings? We know some programme secretaries don’t have a computer or email address but wonder if one of the committee or even art group members would mind receiving emails on behalf of the group. This would mean we would be able to keep in touch more frequently with new artists, events and offers. If you have an email we can use please just give me a call on 01234 764232.
